The Former Yongsan Water Level Observatory was the first self-recording water level station along the Hangang River in Seoul, Korea. Located on the north bank of the Hangang River between Mapo Bridge and Wonhyo Bridge, it was the ninth water level observatory in the country when built.
Although near Yongsan Station, cyclists, walkers, and runners following the Hangang River path often overlook this historic site.
Design and Functionality of Former Yongsan Water Level Observatory

The water level observatory, built in 1924, was designed to measure and track changes caused by tides and flooding. It also recorded high water levels during heavy rain, helping to track water level patterns over time.
The design features a well-shaped observatory made from reinforced concrete. Water from the river flowed into the structure through a 10-centimeter (3.93-inch) wide steel pipe.
A floating mechanism inside the well automatically recorded changes in the water level. Observers could then view the water level inside the well. They took measurements from within the structure rather than directly from the river.
Historical Significance

In 1977, officials shut down the water level observatory after shifts in the Hangang River’s water levels left it on dry land.
Since it no longer served a purpose, they removed the bridge connecting it to the shore. They also removed the monitoring equipment. Though no longer in use, the circular structure still stands today.
In 2022, the city designated the Former Yongsan Water Level Observatory as Seoul Cultural Property No. 18. In the same year, officials recognized it as an important historical site related to Hangang River flood monitoring
